Blogger; the free website from Google
By radhikasree
Many people desire to have a website of their own, but turn back when they come to know about the cost involved in designing and hosting a website. Google has helped such people with its more flexible product, “Blogger”. Blogger lets you design your website or a ‘blog’, free, with its own hassle-free templates, allowing customized settings for normal and advanced users. A blog is a set of posts made by a user in different pages. The templates range from ‘Simple’ to ‘Ethereal’ that can be chosen for your particular niche. The posts you make in your blog are displayed one by one date-wise, with the latest post on top. Blogs are placed in its sub-domain blogspot.
Features
The HTML editor is user-friendly and you can include images, videos and links in your posts. The “Design” option enables the user to edit and insert the right gadget in the right place. Each gadget is a page element that has its own purpose. There are several gadgets available currently and Blogger is adding one by one to improve the functionality of the blog. Page status, followers, images, slideshow of images and profile views are some of them. Customized template and customized page elements give the user total flexibility of creating a blog that is in his imagination. For including ‘Privacy policy’ or ‘About me’ details, you can create static pages that won’t pop up while viewing a blog. They are treated as third-party elements that contain links to other websites, images or videos.
Advantages
- The Google Toolbar has a feature called "BlogThis!" which allows users with Blogger accounts to link posts directly to their blogs.
- Blogger supports Google's Adsense product as a means to generate revenue for the user from running a blog.
- Blogger also started integration of Amazon Associates as a service to generate revenue.
- Group blogs are established by way of multiple author support.
- Customization of Blogger templates is another added feature.
- The standalone app Windows Live Writer of the Windows Live Suite, publishes directly to Blogger.

Blogger is great for starters and testing markets. However, I find that as soon as you are able to, move on to the self-hosted wordpress.
Welcome Emma to my hub. Yes, blogger is easy to use and you get so many built-in designer templates. Thanks for the comment.
I have just started using blogger after two years self hosting and have been so impressed with all it can do. It is very easy to customize. I actually prefer using it to self hosted via wordpress and it is free, compared to $10 a month I was paying.
Thanks Sunga for stopping by and passing a comment. Yes, wordpress may be more flexible than blogger, but only for advanced users.
For small home-based businesses, I think blogger alone is enough. It never takes much time to load even when there is high traffic. Thanks jasmith1 for opening up your mind.
I am not crazy about blogger. Everything on your sidebar appears on all of the other pages. I have yet to figure out how to use those long HTML codes in posts. The widgets are only good for the sidebar as far as I know. There was an older version which showed each post separately with the appearance of a separate page, which cannot be done now. Posts are continuous which I do not like.
Welcome LindaSmith to my hub and thanks for giving your frank opinion. Blogger helps those who want to share their opinions or achievements to the world free of cost. To some extent, it can be helpful for starting a small home-based business also. Appearance, may be, sometimes not up-to that designed by a self-hosted website. Still it's used by many as it's free.
Very interesting hub. I learned something new today.
thanks for sharing this! Voted up
Glad that you learned something from this hub. Thanks for the compliment and for the vote.

but I want to move now on wordpress
I once started at blogger and I am thankful for all I learned there. However, for those who may want to move on to a self hosted Wordpress and are not technically astute, there is a great community which is ever ready to help. That is how I learned to set up my wordpress site.
That said: I recommend blogger for starters.
@Sunga
Thanks Sunga for reinforcing the points.
