Radhika's hobbies include making art & crafts in which she is highly fond of doing fabric painting.

Kids always get entertained with so many indoor and outdoor activities. Playing games, singing songs, drawing pictures and many other activities keep kids involved in doing something they like. Crafts making is another activity that gets counted in this list. Ranging from a large number of paper crafts to an endless number of gluing and stuffing crafts, this activity enhances creative skills, constructive abilities, hand power and much more.

There are 2D and 3D crafts that attract kids in many ways. The stuff and color of the material used in weaving crafts have significant influence in cultivating interest among them. Origami, clay modeling, quilling, collaging and glass painting are some common art & craft activities usually taught to the kids.

1. Origami

This is a traditional Japanese art form that was popularized into other countries. Origami literally means ‘paper folding’. Different shapes are sculpted by means of folding paper in this art. Paper boats, flowers, birds, animals are some of the paper shapes kids are being taught basically.

Making a tulip flower

This is a simple paper craft that any kid may find easier to fold.

  1. First, take a square sheet of paper and fold diagonal-wise as in the picture.
  2. Fold both edges of this triangle shaped paper from the center to the top. This forms the petals.
  3. Now, turn this shape to its back side and fold its edges as shown in the picture. This is to give shape to the flower.
  4. Turn it to its front side and tulip flower is ready!!

Crane bird is the common Origami craft that kids get trained to do. It requires a little more fold to obtain the final shape.

2. Cardboard cut crafts

Cardboard is a wonderful medium for making 3D as well as 2D crafts. Both sturdy and thin cardboards are available for cutting the required pieces that make up the core body of an object.

Making a peacock

Here, four pieces in the shape of the fan tail in descending size are cut out. Then, the neck and stomach part is cut in the proper shape and design of a peacock. It is then inserted through a long cut made through the bottom center of the joined fan pieces.

Decorate the peacock using glitter powder, golden lace and stones. How does this peacock look?

Making a crown

The cutting process is very simple in the making of a crown. Here, a red velvet paper is glued to the cardboard before cut to make it shiny. Then, decorative materials such as stones and sequences make up this crown.

3. Clay Modeling

This is a 3D craft making activity that kids enjoy doing it. Different shapes are molded to make them look alive. The exact shape of objects is obtained in this art form. The texture and color of clays allure kids to get involved in this kind of activity for a longer time. Molding and sculpting fruits and vegetables are the earlier lessons in clay modeling for kids.

Making jasmine flowers

White colored clay is flattened to form a circle first. Then petals are molded and joined to this circled piece. A cluster of jasmine flowers modeled using clay gives a starry appearance.

4. Quilling

This art form uses strips of papers that are rolled into a circle or oval shape. These shapes are then glued to a picture design for decoration. Quilling gives a 3D effect of the picture on the eye because of its outward projection.

5. Collaging

This is another art form that makes use of several visually appealing materials for stuffing a picture. These materials can be bits of papers, ribbons, clothes, newspaper clippings and so on. Collaging makes a picture beautiful and lively.

6. Glass painting

Painting can be made interesting among kids with this kind of painting. Pictures shine like crystals in glass painting. Using a marker, the design is outlined in a glass piece. Then glass painting colors are applied to it.

Look at these crafts that my kid did in his school last year. The different materials used in decorating the pictures give them a distinct visual appearance.
